Biography

  Kenneth M. Cuno researches, teaches, and writesabout the history of the modern Middle East. He received a Ph.D. in history atUCLA in 1985, and taught at the American University in Cairo before coming tothe University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. His forthcoming book isModernizing Marriage: family, ideology, and law in nineteenth and earlytwentieth century Egypt, which will be published by Syracuse UniversityPress in 2015. Other recent books include Race and Slavery inNineteenth-Century Egypt, Sudan, and the Ottoman Mediterranean: Histories ofTrans-Saharan Africans, co-edited with Terence Walz (2010); and Family,Gender, and Law in a Globalizing Middle East and South Asia, co-editedwith Manisha Desai (2009). His recent articles include “Marriage: HistoricalPractice,” in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Women, (2013); “Womenwith Missing Husbands: Marriage in Nineteenth Century Egypt,” in Objectivityand Subjectivity in the Historiography of Egypt: In Honour of Nelly Hanna (2012);and “Egypt to c. 1919,” in The New Cambridge History of Islam (2010).
