Reading List for Preliminary Doctoral Examinations in Russian History

Prepared by Diane Koenker, John Randolph, and Mark Steinberg
Revised September 2007

The following is a foundation list, subject to alteration and amendment as new studies are published and as fits the particular program of the student. Students constructing major or minor fields in Russian history, in consultation with faculty, are to construct their own appropriate study lists. The following titles are meant as an aid in this process, guided by the principle of combining substantive coverage with important interpretive contributions and directions. Works marked with an asterisk (*) are especially helpful for students preparing a minor field in Russian history, and it is assumed that both major and minor lists will include most of these core items. With few exceptions, articles in current journals have not been included, though such students should be aware of such new work. The list also does not include many useful primary sources, novels, and memoirs.

Students with minor fields in Russian history should prepare lists of approximately 40-50 works. Students with major fields should develop lists of approximately 120-150 works. Although the lists below are organized by 3 main chronological subdivisions (Early, Late Imperial, and Post-1917) some works overlap eras and may be repeated in lists. Coverage of all chronological periods and themes is expected.
